The Hindu Kush slab break-off as revealed by deep structure and crustal deformation

چکیده
Abstract Break-off of part the down-going plate during continental collision occurs due to tensile stresses built-up between deep and shallow slab, for which buoyancy is increased because continental-crust subduction. governs subsequent orogenic evolution but real-time observations are rare as it happens over geologically short times. Here we present a finite-frequency tomography, based on jointly inverted local remote earthquakes, Hindu Kush in Afghanistan, where slab break-off ongoing. We interpret our results crustal subduction top northwards-subducting Indian lithospheric whose penetration depth increases along-strike while thinning steepening. This implies that propagating laterally highest stretching rates occur final pinching-off. In crust, earthquakes geodetic data show transition from focused distributed deformation, relate variable degree crust-mantle coupling presumably associated with at depth.

Recurring large deep earthquakes in Hindu Kush driven by a sinking slab
Hindu Kush subduction zone produces large intermediate-depth earthquakes within a small volume every 10–15 years. Here we study the last three M ≥ 7 events within the cluster and find complex and diverse rupture processes. However, their main subevents appear to recur on the same fault patch, dipping 70° to the south. This recurrence requires an average of 9.6 cm/yr slip rate on the patch, much...
متن کاملCrustal structure and deformation of the SE Tibetan plateau revealed by receiver function data
We analyze a large amount of receiver function data recorded by regional seismic networks of the China Earthquake Administration to estimate crustal structure and deformation beneath the southeast margin of the Tibetan plateau and its surrounding areas. We develop a comprehensive analysis method that facilitates robust extraction of azimuthal seismic anisotropy from receiver function data. The ...

متن کاملFlash Flood Risk Management in the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region
The Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) is a mountain system of extremes with great influence over the Asian continent. The system stretches 3,500 km over eight countries, from Afghanistan in the west to Myanmar in the east. It is the world’s largest and highest mountain system, with more than 30 peaks measuring over 7,600 m. It is also the youngest mountain system on Earth and still tectonically active...
متن کاملAfghan Hindu Kush: Where Eurasian Sub-Continent Gene Flows Converge
Despite being located at the crossroads of Asia, genetics of the Afghanistan populations have been largely overlooked. It is currently inhabited by five major ethnic populations: Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek and Turkmen. Here we present autosomal from a subset of our samples, mitochondrial and Y- chromosome data from over 500 Afghan samples among these 5 ethnic groups. This Afghan data was sup...
